Everything We Know (So Far) About MTG’s Tarkir: Dragonstorm

One exciting aspect of next year’s release calendar is returning to existing planes. 2024 allowed us to explore new and exciting environments, such as Bloomburrow and Duskmourn: House of Horror, but in 2025, we will revisit a long-time favorite for enfranchised Magic players, Tarkir. Khans of Tarkir was released in 2014, and it was a widely popular release as it introduced iconic cards such as Siege Rhino and Wingmate Roc, two cards that dominated Standard during their tenure. The other exciting aspect about Tarkir? Dragons. Lots of Dragons.

Unsurprisingly, Dragons are one of the more-loved creature types in Magic, with The Ur-Dragon remaining one of the best Commanders to play if you want to be greedy and play with all of the colors in Magic. So, you can expect a ton of excitement around the release as players look to make their Ur-Dragon builds er, more disgusting.

With information being light, let’s dive into what we know about Tarkir: Dragonstorm, the second Standard release of 2025.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm Key Dates

  • Global Release: April 11, 2025
  • Prerelease: April 4-10, 2025
  • Set Code: TDM
  • Special Guests: SPG

It’s expected that Tarkir: Dragonstorm will release on April 11, 2025, with Magic Online and MTG Arena releases falling a few days earlier. Usually, digital releases occur on the Tuesday of a given release week, meaning it’s likely going to be April 8, 2025, for Tarkir: Dragonstorm.

Tarkir: Dragstorm Lore

Tarkir: Dragonstorm takes place on Tarkir, a plane we first visited in 2014 with Khans of Tarkir. Back then, Magic releases fell into “blocks”, which were two to three Standard sets that took place on the same plane where Fate Reforged and Dragons of Tarkir were the other two releases focusing on Tarkir. Wizards are looking to take the “best of both worlds” with these releases, as Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir were very well-received by Magic players. Ugin and Sarkhan are confirmed to return in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, with a likely chance we’ll see some familiar faces from the original Tarkir block.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm marks the end of the Dragonstorm Arc, which began with Bloomburrow, where dragons are beginning to pour through dragonstorms that are prominent on Tarkir. With the dragons pouring through Tarkir and potentially compromising the Omenpaths, a resurgent clan of Tarkir strikes back against these threats to defend the Multiverse.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm Products

While not confirmed yet, you can expect Tarkir: Dragonstorm to have the usual range of products, including Play and Collector Boosters, Bundles, Prerelease Kits, and likely a few Commander Precons to round out the release. With Aetherdrift only having two Commander Precons, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tarkir: Dragonstorm have the full four Commander Precons as we ramp into tentpole releases in Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy.

The Special Guests in Tarkir: Dragonstorm

The Special Guests are likely to return in Takir: Dragonstorm, which is a Masters-level reprint series that began with the release of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Usually, these reprints highlight cards that marry the flavor of a given plane, so you can expect a ton of Dragon or Dragon-related cards to accommodate the Special Guests with Tarkir: Dragonstorm’s release.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm Card Treatments

While it remains early days, there isn’t much information on what card treatments will appear in Tarkir: Dragonstorm. However, there will be Ghostflame cards to collect upon the April 11 release. These are limited to ten cards from the set and are expected to be some of the more sought-after treatments from the Standard release. You can expect the Ghostflame cards to be limited to Collector Boosters based on exotic treatments featured in previous Magic sets, where it’s confirmed that Ugin and Sarkhan will appear in the Borderless-like treatment.

Furthermore, it’s expected a Headliner card will appear in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, which is an initiative that began with Innistrad: Remastered. With Innistrad Remastered, a serialized Movie Poster Edgar Markov is the Headliner card for the reprint release, with a serialized copy of The Aetherspark being the prize in Aetherdrift. It’s worth noting the Headliner card doesn’t always have to be serialized, so it’ll be interesting to see what the Headliner card is for Tarkir: Dragonstorm as we draw closer to the April 11 release date.
