The Best Foundations Jumpstart Commanders
Foundations Jumpstart (or Jumpstart 2025) has an absurdly high number of legendary creatures at 56, and just under half of those are brand-new as well, 27 in fact. Are we upset it’s not 28 for a nice 50/50 split? Yes, but here we are anyway, so close to numerical balance, and yet so far. Anyway, we’ve ranked these based on how good we think they are overall, including ease of use, potential, and how good they are for newer players. Let’s get into it.
Rev, Tithe Extractor (NEW)
Rev, Tithe Extractor
Foundations Jumpstart, Rare
Rev, Tithe Extractor is an immensely fun card. It costs four-mana four a black 3/3 that lets you give deathtouch to a creature whenever you attack. Along with that, whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, you can create a Treasure token and exile the top card of that player’s library. You can then cast that spell while it’s exiled. It’s lots of fun, but the strength varies depending on your playgroup.
Pol Jamaar, Illusionist (NEW)
Pol Jamaar, Illusionist
Foundations Jumpstart, Mythic
Pol Jamaar, Illusionist is a six-mana blue 4/5 with flying. When it enters, you choose a creature type and then draw a card for each one of those creatures you control. It’s a nice card draw spell, and will undoubtedly do alright in some decks, but it’s a bit uninspiring unless you’re trying to throw your hand at people.
Brimaz, King of Oreskos
Brimaz, King of Oreskos
Foundations Jumpstart, Mythic
Brimaz, King of Oreskos is a classic white Cat Commander and costs three-mana. This 3/4 has vigilance, and when it attacks, you create a 1/1 Cat that’s attacking. When you block with it, you get a 1/1 Cat token that’s blocking. It’s fun, and while simple, having additional bodies with a creature type that only gets stronger with each new set is amazing.
Dionus, Elvish Archdruid (NEW)
Dionus, Elvish Archdruid
Foundations Jumpstart, Uncommon
It’s Elf time again with Dionus, Elvish Archdruid. This four-mana green 3/3 grants all of your Elf Creatures the ability to become untapped once per turn when they tap, and they get a +1/+1 counter on them too. Combine this with the ability to tap so many Elves for mana, and you’ve got a really fun way to build up an army and a board state.
Vilis, Broker of Blood
Get your Warlock contracts ready because we’re talking about Vilis, Broker of Blood. This black eight-mana 8/8 with flying lets you pay one black mana and two life to give a creature -1/-1 until end of turn. On top of that, whenever you lose life, you draw that many cards. While it’s an expensive card, if you untap with it you can wipe out the majority of creatures with ease and draw loads of cards while doing so.
Kodama of the West Tree
Kodama of the West Tree
Foundations Jumpstart, Mythic
Kodama of the West Tree is a three-mana green 3/3 with reach. It grants any creatures with Equipment, Auras or counters on them trample, and makes it so if one of those creatures deals combat damage to a player, you can search up a basic land and put it into play tapped. As long as you build around this right, you’ll never run out of lands.
Taeko, the Patient Avalanche (NEW)
Taeko, the Patient Avalanche
Foundations Jumpstart, Mythic
We’re into the top 10 now, and we’re starting with Taeko, the Patient Avalanche. Taeko is a four-mana blue 4/5 Turtle Ninja, the coolest combination of creature types, that enters tapped. If a creature you control leaves the battlefield but didn’t die, then you get to scry one and put a +1/+1 counter on it. You can also pay one blue or black mana to make an attacking creature unblockable when Taeko attacks. Basically, you can use ninjutsu a bunch to put +1/+1 counters on it before making it unblockable and killing opponents in one hit.
Rodolf Duskbringer
Rodolf Duskbringer
Foundations Jumpstart, Rare
Rodolf Duskbringer is a Vampire Angel, which means it’s the most glam metal card on this list. This six-mana black 4/4 has flying, deathtouch and lifelink, and it gains indestructible until end of turn whenever you gain life. In your end step, you can pay two mana, one of which has to be white or black, and return a card to the battlefield that has a mana value equal to or less than the amount of life you gained that turn. Even if it’s just from Rodolf attacking, that means two-mana for a four-mana value card back from the dead at the end of every one of your turns.
Shroofus Sproutsire (NEW)
Shroofus Sproutsire
Foundations Jumpstart, Rare
We have probably the most hype new Commander now with Shroofus Sproutsire. This adorable three-mana 1/1 has trample, and makes it so that you get 1/1 tokens equal to any combat damage to a player any Saproling creatures you control do. As long as you put in a few ways to buff up your Saprolings, like with Verdeloth the Ancient, you’ll be able to flood the board.
Neerdiv, Devious Diver (NEW)
Neerdiv, Devious Diver
Foundations Jumpstart, Rare
Neerdiv, Devious Diver is going to be a milling menace, and we can’t wait. Neerdiv is a three-mana blue 2/2 that mills a player equal to its power whenever it becomes tapped. It also gets a +1/+1 counter on it whenever you cast a spell or activate an ability from your graveyard. Throw in plenty of flashback goodies and you’ve got an incredibly cool mill deck.
Evereth, Viceroy of Plunder (NEW)
Evereth, Viceroy of Plunder
Foundations Jumpstart, Rare
Another new Vampire option now with Evereth, Viceroy of Plunder. This three-mana black 2/2 has flying, and a bunch more text. Basically, you can sacrifice creatures or artifacts to put a +1/+1 counter on it, and if it was a Treasure, Evereth gains lifelink for the turn. Then, when Evereth dies, you can pay two mana, one of which has to be red of black, to deal damage to each opponent equal to its power.
Aphelia, Viper Whisperer (NEW)
Aphelia, Viper Whisperer
Foundations Jumpstart, Mythic
Aphelia, Viper Whisperer is a two-mana black 1/3 with deathtouch. When it attacks, you can pay two mana, one of which has to be green or black, to create a 1/1 Snake token with deathtouch. You can also pay five-mana to make players lose half their life rounded up when one or more Gorgons or Snakes you control deal damage to a player. It’s a potentially very fast kill; you just need the right Snakes and Gorgons.
Hurska Sweet-Tooth (NEW)
Hurska Sweet-Tooth
Foundations Jumpstart, Mythic
Hurska Sweet-Tooth is a three-mana green 3/3. It creates a Food token whenever it attacks, and you can pay one green or white mana whenever you gain life to give a creature +X/+X equal to the amount gained. This turns any life gain from a way to extend the fight into a way to end it, and should be pretty powerful.
Thurid, Mare of Destiny (NEW)
Thurid, Mare of Destiny
Foundations Jumpstart, Mythic
Thurid, Mare of Destiny is a four-mana white Pegasus 2/4 with flying and lifelink. It not only grants other Pegasi, Unicorns and Horses you control +1/+1, but lets you copy every Pegasus, Unicorn and Horse spell you cast. This is a frankly silly ability that will allow you to create an army of fairly dangerous creatures with very little effort.
