The Most Valuable Magic: The Gathering Cards in Packs Right Now! September 2024

From Dominaria United to Bloomburrow, here’s the big money cards you can open in packs today!

Since around 2019, Wizards of the Coast monumentally pushed Magic: The Gathering into the collector space by offering a new product called the Collector Booster, offering to chance to open exotic foils and unique frame treatments to enhance the “Booster Fun” experience. With the number of various printings available these days, it can be challenging to know whether the card opened is worth anything, given the immense popularity of Magic over the last few years.

Today, I’ll be looking at some of the most expensive Magic: The Gathering cards you can open from recent boosters — the products you often find on shelves at local game stores. And before we begin, there are a handful of rules when diving into the trove of value you can open in booster packs right now. 

First, we’ll be focusing on Standard releases that remain legal in the Standard format, with attention towards supplemental releases such as The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth and Commander Masters. However, there will be no focus on Commander Precons, Challenger Decks, Secret Lairs, or the Commander Collection — as these are minor ancillary releases that don’t appear in booster product form. After reading this article, you’ll have a better understanding of which Magic cards command significant value from recent expansions. And with this knowledge, you can figure out which Magic product you can prioritize to purchase going forward.

With that, let’s examine some of the most expensive Magic cards you can open in packs right now, starting with the latest release — Bloomburrow.

Bloomburrow

Bloomburrow is the most recent Magic release and looks to be one of the bestselling Standard releases of all time. There’s a ton to love about Bloomburrow, from adorable animalfolk to synergistic mechanics, and as a result of these traits, it’s becoming a huge hit with collectors. Even in Play Boosters, there’s decent value with Three Tree City and Innkeeper’s Talent currently leading the way in terms of value. Furthermore, Ygra, Eater of All and Caretaker’s Talent are on the move as these cards are starting to see notable competitive and casual play.

Appearing only in Bloomburrow Collector Boosters, you run the opportunity of opening an Anime Borderless Raised Foil of some of the most notable characters on Bloomburrow. At the time of publication, Chatterfang, Squirrel Genral, Ms. Bumbleflower, and Jace, the Mind Sculptor are the most expensive cards from this range, and appear in roughly 1% of Collector Boosters. Generally speaking, these Anime Raised Foils are the big-ticket cards from Bloomburrow, where opening any of these will generate modest value towards your next purchase or trade.

Of course, you can’t have a Standard release without discussing the range of Showcase and Borderless treatments available. For example, the seasonal printings of Three Tree City are some of the most valuable Borderless cards you can open right now, which appear in Play and Collector Boosters. Unlike the Full Art Basic Lands from Bloomburrow, the seasonal Three Tree City cards aren’t staggered in rarity meaning you have the same chance to open a Spring Three Tree City than a Winter one. Furthermore, Lumra, Bellow of the Woods is becoming a popular card as it provides works by the iconic Mitsuhiro Arita, who is noted for their time on the Pokémon TCG.

The Field Note Borderless cards are worth something also, depicting a unique glimpse at the daunting Calamity Beasts that wander around the realms of Bloomburrow. At the time of writing, Maha, Its Feathers Night and Ygra, Eater of All are some of the higher-value Field Note Borderless cards from Bloomburrow.

And lastly, Imagine: Courageous Critters is the bonus sheet for Bloomburrow that is printed under the Commander: Bloomburrow set code. Appearing in Collector Boosters, you have the chance to open some of your favorite Magic characters in animal form, or a tree if you happen to be Karn, the Great Creator! Right now, Chatterfang, Squirrel General, Liliana of the Dark Realms and Jace, the Mind Sculptor are the most valuable from this adorable crop. While these Imagine: Courageous Critters aren’t as valuable compared to their Borderless Raised Foil counterparts, these are becoming popular with casual players who are looking to add some adorable flair to their Commander builds.

Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed

The most recent release under the Universes Beyond sub-brand is Assassin’s Creed. Dropping in July, Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creedis a smaller release offering a range of products including Beyond and Collector Boosters. Beyond Boosters are much smaller compared to Play Boosters, but offer a bite-sized experience if you’re into Assassin’s Creed. At the time of writing, Edward Kenway, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad are some of the biggest hits from the release. In particular, their Showcase Textured Foil variants command decent value as these only appear in Collector Boosters. That said, Kassandra, Eagle Bearer and Eivor, Wolf-Kissed are also decent hits from the Universes Beyond release.

And that isn’t all, there’s a selection of cards in Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed where you can open Sokrates, Athenian Teacher, Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh, Leonardo da Vinci, and Mary Read and Anne Bonny in serialized form. However, these are a little different from previous serialized cards as these only appear in their character’s native language. For example, the serialized printing of Leonardo da Vinci only appears in Italian, whereas Sokrates only appears in Greek, and so forth. And much like many other ways to obtain serialized cards in Magic, these only appear in Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed Collector Boosters.

Outside of the assassins and historical characters, there are a bunch of other cards from Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed that are valuable such as Brotherhood Regalia and the reprints of Sword of Feast and Famine and Sword of Light and Shadow. The Sword cycle plays an important role for Equipment-focused Commanders (sometimes called Voltron) as you want to deal tons of damage with your Commander, so these always see evergreen demand at the casual tables. Lastly, Black Market Connections is a solid reprint for Commander players, and one that will keep a modest price when cracking those packs!

Modern Horizons 3

Released in June 2024,  Modern Horizons 3 is looking to become the bestselling Magic release of all time as it packs highly-powerful cards coupled with desirable reprints. While the tail on these Modern Horizons releases is remarkably long, there’s already some excellent value to be found in Play and Collector Boosters. Take the Flip-Planeswalker Borderless cards where Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student and Sorin of House Markov are some of the more desirable Planeswalkers from this release. And if you’re cracking Collector Boosters, you run the chance of opening a Textured Foil Flip-Planeswalker that commands even more value!

Planeswalkers aside, the Eldrazi return in a massive way with Emrakul, the World Anew and Ulamog, the Defiler being some of the most expensive Eldrazi cards from Modern Horizons 3. Did you manage to open a Concept Borderless or Etched Foil printing of any of the Eldrazi? Even better! You’ve opened a ton of value. There’s also the chance to open Kozilek, Ulamog, or Emrakul as serialized printings out of 250 in Modern Horizons 3 Collector Boosters, and these will be in massive demand with budding Eldrazi collectors.

Speaking of Eldrazi, Ugin’s Labyrinth is another sought-after card due to Modern play and its ability to ramp into Eldrazi ahead of schedule. While it’s seen plenty of references to Ancient Tomb, the card is a must-have for any Eldrazi strategy in Modern, meaning it’s another high-value hit from the release. Outside of Planeswalkers and Eldrazi, Phlage, Titan of Fire’s Fury, Ocelot Pride, Necrodominance, and Phyrexian Tower are some of the best value hits you can also open!

Modern Horizons 3 also saw a reprint of the Allied Fetch Lands and while some of these aren’t massively high-value hits, these are worth keeping to one side as the demand for these cards is evergreen. Fetch Lands play a notable role in Modern, Commander, and Legacy so these make for decent trade fodder if needed.

Lastly, the Special Guests return and offer decent value with Modern Horizons 3 where Solitude, Subtlety, and Endurance being some of the best cards to open from the subset, especially if you crack open any stunning Textured Foils from Modern Horizons 3 Collector Boosters! Some of these Elemental Incarnations see a ton of play in Modern and Legacy (not Grief anymore, unfortunately), making these reasonable cards to trade away if you don’t play any of these formats.

Outlaws of Thunder Junction

Outlaws of Thunder Junction  is the second Standard release of 2024, offering a mixture of cowboys, outlaws, and crime-committing! Even with Modern Horizons 3’s release now beyond the er, horizon, Outlaws of Thunder Junction offers tremendous value for players looking to crack packs of the latest set! Outlaws of Thunder Junction is a massive release with several bonus sheets that vary in value. Given the breadth of the release, it’s effortless to miss some of the more expensive cards from these bonus sheets, as there’s so much going on.

Breaking News

Breaking News is the reprint bonus sheet from Outlaws of Thunder Junction focusing on committing crimes. While reprints often mean card prices go downwards, there are some exotic variants of these Breaking News cards you can only open in Collector Boosters. Coming in Textured Foil, the Mythic Rare Breaking News cards come in a stunning treatment that are also tremendously valuable. Even outside of these treatments, Mana Drain and Mindbreak Trap are the two most valuable cards from the subset as they’re strong Commander cards. The reason these Textured Foil cards are so expensive is that they only appear in 1% less in Collector Boosters.

The Big Score

The Big Score is the second bonus sheet in Outlaws of Thunder Junction, which was supposed to be its own release but Wizards of the Coast decided to merge the set into the Standard release. Unlike Breaking News, The Big Score is full of new cards that are Standard legal and as it turns out, these cards are quite powerful. And if a card is quite powerful, it becomes highly sought-after and valuable. Simulacrum Synthesizer, Vaultborn Tyrant, and Sword of Wealth and Power are some of the biggest hits from The Big Score, with Raised Foils commanding incredible value as these are less than 1% pull rate in Outlaws of Thunder Junction Collector Boosters. 

Universes Beyond: Fallout

Universes Beyond: Fallout dropped on March 8 2024, where Wizards of the Coast expanded the sub-brand in collaboration with Bethesda Softworks. Universes Beyond: Fallout offers a similar product line to Doctor Who, where there are four Commander Precons and a Collector Booster range to support the release. Even though prices haven’t quite settled on Universes Beyond: Fallout card singles, there’s already some amazing value if you look to crack Collector Boosters.

Bobbleheads are an iconic part of Fallout where they make you feel S.P.E.C.I.A.L, and they can also command decent value. While traditional printings of the seven Bobbleheads aren’t much, the Surge Foil printings of these are slowly generating value and are becoming an amazing hit to open in Collector Boosters. Furthermore, there’s the chance to open serialized Bobblehead cards in Collector Boosters, which are the massive value hits you can open from Universes Beyond: Fallout. Serialized out of 500, these Bobblehead cards are amazingly rare, but are also a collector’s dream for anyone who loves the franchise!

Outside of the Bobbleheads, the Vault Boy Borderless Surge Foil cards are also amazingly pricey due to how hard they are to open in Collector Booster. In total, there are seven of these Vault Boy Borderless cards to collect, and highlight some of the more iconic cards you see in Commander, such as Farewell, Sol Ring, and Arcane Signet. Surge Foils aside, these Vault Boy Borderless cards are reasonable value hits even in non-foil. Furthermore, Wizards released a special Secret Lair x Fallout release not too long ago that also saw a highly-value Fallout bonus card, which you can read here!

Surge Foil Showcase cards are also valuable, especially if you open any of the hottest cards from Universes Beyond: Fallout. Dogmeat, Ever Loyal, Radstorm, and Fog Crawler (Vigor) are some of the best hits from the Showcase cards, and this is because there’s been less allocation of the Collector Boosters, so prices of these cards will remain resilient for a while. 

Murders at Karlov Manor

The first Standard expansion of 2024 was Murders at Karlov Manor, which takes place on Ravnica with an exciting murder mystery backdrop. While it took some time for Murders at Karlov Manor to generate interest, there’s some excellent value that wasn’t there upon release. Take Leyline of the Guildpact, which saw modest interest leading up to the February 9 release but now, is becoming a must-play card in Pioneer and Modern.

But also, Mythic Rares such as Delney, Streetwise Lookout, and the Rare Surveil Lands (Thundering Falls, Undercity Sewers, etc) are all excellent hits from Murders at Karlov Manor. Then if you’re feeling lucky, the Standard set introduces Invisible Ink Dossier cards that offer some unique foiling, these only appear in less than 1% of Collector Boosters and command decent value.

And much like with most releases these days, there’s a selection of serialized cards numbered out of 250. These only appear in Murders at Karlov Manor Collector Boosters much like the Invisible Ink cards. Unlike other releases with serialized cards, there’s only a handful this time around as they appear on the Ravnica Frame Guildleaders.

Ravnica Remastered

Ravnica Remastered was the first release of 2024 and while it wasn’t as impressive as the Commander-focused Dominaria Remastered, there’s plenty of value in this reprint release. Ravnica remains one of the most iconic planes in Magic: The Gathering’s history, meaning there’s always going to be interest from players to snap up cards from the release. Despite the reprints, there’s plenty of value if you’re looking to crack any Ravnica Remastered Draft Boosters.

Appearing only in around 1% of Ravnica Remastered Collector Boosters are the serialized cards, which is where much of the value from this release resides. In total, there 64 Rares and Mythic Rares that each come with a serialization of 500, adorned in the classic Retro Frame. While some of these serialized cards are less desirable than others, they’re definitely worth something to the right buyer. Outside of serialized cards, Cyclonic Rift is the best hit that appear in traditional, Borderless, and Retro Frame variants.

And of course, Ravnica Remastered sees the reprint of the iconic Shock Lands, which are some of the best mana options you play in all of in Magic’s history. Steam Vents, Blood Crypt, Watery Grave remain some of the valuable cards from this cycle, but opening any of them will warrant demand from casual and competitive players. Lastly, Borderless copies of Divine Visitation and Bruvac, the Grandiloquent still hold notable value at the time of publication.

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan

The final Standard release of 2023 is The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, that takes us back to the plane of Ixalan, where treasures lurk deep in the catacombs of the Mesoamerican plane. Since the Standard expansion’s release, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan comes with impressive value due to a good chunk of the cards being playable in a mixture of formats.

Cavern of Souls and Tishana’s Tidebinder are Constructed all-stars at the time of writing, where Modern and Pioneer are the most welcoming homes for these cards. Furthermore, Roaming Throne remains one of the hottest Commander cards right now, as it offers a Panharmonicon-like effect for Kindred archetypes. The Lost Caverns of Ixalan is full of Vampires, Dinosaurs, Merfolk, and Pirates, so a card like Roaming Throne is just excellent if you play a Commander build with creatures of the same type.

Speaking of creatures, if there’s one thing Magic players absolutely love is playing with Dinosaur cards, which is why Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant remains such a popular and valuable card to open in packs. Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation is an amazing card for Commander if you want to triple (yes, triple!) the number of tokens created in a game. Chimil, the Inner Sun is another notable hit as it’s a colorless card with a powerful effect, meaning it can slide into any casual Commander build without a sweat.

Moving on, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan also features Special Guests, which is a Masters-style reprint subset that will marry the flavor and art to the theme of a given plane. Many of the Special Guests cards are desirable, such as Mana Crypt, Polyraptor, and Underworld Breach being some of the high-value hits you can open in Set and Collector Boosters.

Another exciting part of the release is the return of (Cosmium) Neon Ink cards first seen in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, where you can open unique variants of cards at a much lower pull rate, something you’ll see with Mana Crypt and Cavern of Souls that will only appear in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Collector Boosters. These are by far and away the most lucrative hits in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, with each Neon Ink color representing a different level of rarity, which will influence its value. 

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Holiday Release

Released on November 3 2023, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Holiday Release gives another opportunity for players and collectors to snap up cards from the massive summer 2023 release. While the Holiday Release is much smaller compared to the base set, there’s some strong value here, especially when it comes to opening any of the Special Collector Boosters. Once again, there are Tales of Middle-earth cards which will be numbered up to 500, plus a variety of Borderless Poster, Showcase Scrolls, and Brothers Hildebrandt cards to open in these Special Collector Boosters.

As briefly mentioned earlier, the Borderless Poster and Realms and Relics serialized cards are by far and away the most valuable cards you can open from the Holiday Release Special Collector Boosters. They’re super unique and come in a stunning Double Rainbow foiling, and depending on the number you open (#001, #069 (nice), #420 being the most desirable), you could be in for a pretty penny. Going further, the Borderless Poster cards themselves are worth something, with The One Ring and Sauron, the Dark Lord being the noteworthy hits.

The Showcase Scrolls have received a mixed reaction as they’re similar to Innistrad: Double Feature’s haphazard execution but in color, The One Ring, and Forth Eorlingas!, and Orcish Bowmasters are the big high-value hits when cracking Special Edition Collector Boosters. In addition to these exciting cards, you have the opportunity to open the Realms and Relics in Surge Foil, a series of cards seen in the base Tales of Middle-earth release.

Granted, many of these have crashed in price since the reprint in the Tales of Middle-earth Holiday Release as the pull rates drastically changed on these, but they do remain valuable hits in addition to being collector pieces for The Lord of the Rings enthusiasts. 

Universes Beyond: Doctor Who

Released on October 13 2023, Universes Beyond: Doctor Who is the next entry in the impressive Universes Beyond sub-brand. Doctor Who is one of the longest-running television shows in the UK, and there are four amazing Commander Precons along with a Collector Booster range to support this exciting collaboration with the BBC. While this release focuses on the four Commander Precons, Universes Beyond: Doctor Who reintroduces serialized cards, where you can collect Doctor cards with a unique number in Double-Rainbow Foil.

There’s around 500 of these to collect with a varying number based on the Doctor in question. So for example, The Tenth Doctor will have a serialization of up to 510, whereas The Thirteenth Doctor will have a serialization of 513, and so forth. Another notable part about this release is the return of Surge Foils, and based on the fact that many of the cards you can open in Collector Boosters are biased towards opening Rares, you can open some Uncommon Surge Foil cards that command high value, such as Cyberman Patrol as opening an Uncommon Surge Foil is rarer than opening a Mythic Rare Surge Foil in this release. However, many of the Surge Foil cards in general remain valuable, so double-check those prices as you may be sitting on a small fortune!

As for non-Surge Foil cards, Everybody Lives!, Displaced Dinosaurs and Snuff Out are excellent cards to open from these Commander Precons that will retain some value. More notably, Displaced Dinosaurs will see some price resiliency due to the upcoming release of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, which also features Dinosaurs. 

Wilds of Eldraine

Wilds of Eldraine dropped in the fall last yearand after the polarizing opinions of Throne of Eldraine, we returned to the Arthurian world where Knights, Faeries, and various flavors of Gingerbread appear in the release. At the time of publication, Agatha’s Soul Cauldron, Moonshaker Cavalry, and Beseech the Mirror are some of the high-value cards you can open from Wilds of Eldraine Draft Boosters. Each of the aforementioned cards is blowing up in Commander combined with eternal constructed applications with Agatha Soul Cauldron and Beseech the Mirror.

 These also have added value of being fantastic long-term holds due to their broad applications, so it’s also fine to not sell immediately and wait for further value down the line. Going further, there’s a bonus sheet in Wilds of Eldraine called the Enchanting Tales, where 63 of Magic’s most notable Enchantment cards feature in the Standard expansion.

While many of these Enchanting Tales cards are close to bulk Rare prices, there’s a handful of cards that are currently valuable and could see a further rise in value over time. Stunning cards such as Rhystic Study, Doubling Season, and Parrellel Lives are some of the more desirable hits from this fantastic bonus sheet. These three cards are massive Commander staples to the point there will always be demand, so you can definitely get a decent price if you intend to sell or trade.

Furthermore, 20 of these Enchanting Tales cards will appear in Borderless Anime treatments with the chance of opening a Confetti Foil, which only appear in Wilds of Eldraine Collector Boosters and are the most valuable cards you can hit from the release. Confetti Foils have a pull rate of less than 3%, which is similar to the Textured Foils from Double Masters 2022 and Commander Masters. While these Confetti Foils are valuable, the best hits at the time of writing are Doubling Season, Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe, and Necropotence.

Released in August, Commander Masters offers a wealth of exciting reprints for Magic’s most popular format, Commander. Now prices have fully settled, if you happen to open any of the Textured Foil cards in Commander Masters Collector Boosters, these are big money and likely become collector pieces going forward. In particular, Jeweled Lotus and The Ur-Dragon will be the most in-demand of the Textured Foil cards as Jeweled Lotus is one of the best mana enablers in Commander, and The Ur-Dragon is one of the most popular Commanders to play in the singleton format.

Commander Masters also includes a bunch of Etched Foil cards which right now, are pretty valuable. In particular, Cyclonic Rift, Deflecting Swat, and even The Ur-Dragon are some excellent yet valuable cards to open from Commander Masters. It seems as of right now that the Etched Foils are holding value which includes the Medallion cards, a cycle of cards that only had one genuine printing in Tempest, which was back in 1997. Like with the many other stunning treatments in Commander Masters, you can only open these Etched Foil cards in Collector Boosters.

Moving on, Borderless Profile cards are a new way to appreciate some of your favorite Legendaries and while many of these are affordable, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and The Ur-Dragon remain the best hits from this series in terms of value. There are a bunch of other Borderless cards that are valuable hits such as the free spell cycle in Fierce Guardianship and Deflecting Swat, where even Deadly Rollick is also a desirable a card to open.

And outside all the exotic and stunning variants you can open in Commander Masters, Demonic Tutor, Doubling Season, and Jeweled Lotus remain some of the best cards to open from the expansion, as these are evergreen Commander cards that will continue to see play for a long time. Despite the coveted 1/1 The One Ring being officially found, there’s still plenty of value to be had in these Draft, Set, and Collector Boosters in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. Of course, The One Ring remains one of the best cards you can open from the set, as it’s seeing impressive amounts of play in Modern, Legacy, and even Vintage. Even opening a Foil or Extended Art) printing of The One Ring also remains highly valuable, as well as the Borderless printing from the Tales of Middle-earth Bundle as many are looking to snag the product as an easier way to snag copies of the in-demand card.

It’s easy to assume serialized cards or cards featuring an exotic foiling are the only ones that are genuinely valuable, and while there’s some merit to that mindset, however, these Sol Rings that come in High Elves, Quenya, in Tengwar letterform are also very limited in number and quite valuable. Coupled with the fact Sol Ring is the most-played Commander card and The Lord of the Rings enthusiasts will want these unique cards for their collection, so shifting one of these for a good price won’t be difficult. Released on May 12 2023,March of the Machine: The Aftermath is an extra mini-Standard expansion that ties up loose ends from the story concluded in March of the Machine. Admittedly a weird release, March of the Machine: The Aftermath offers some decent value if you happen to open Epilogue and Collector Boosters. The most notable card is Nissa, Resurgent Animist, which is the most valuable card to open, with Extended, Showcase, Retro, and traditional copies all being excellent hits.

As the second return to Phyrexia, the release offers new mechanics, such as Toxic with a return to well-loved keywords such as Proliferate to help establish memorable gameplay experiences. Despite the dozen-or-so printings of Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines in Phyrexia: All Will Be One, she is one of the most valuable cards you can open from the expansion. Especially if you open the Step-and-Compleat Foil variants, a similar foil process seen with the Unfinity Galaxy Foils, these come with a Phyrexian pattern across the card to highlight their compleation. Outside of the White-aligned Praetor, Mondrak, Glory Dominus is another fantastic card you can open that is already seeing a wealth of Commander play given the gameplay association with Anointed Procession, a card from Amonkhet that remains a staple in the singleton format.

Serialized cards were a relatively new territory for Wizards of the Coast at this point, and inThe Brothers’ War: Retro Artifacts, there are 31,500 of these cards in circulation — 500 of each of the 63 artifact cards available in Double Rainbow Foil. As each card comes with a number out of 500, there’s a chance you can open something collectible and fetch an incredible price if you find the right buyer. Even outside of these unique numbered cards, The Brothers’ War is a solid set to crack packs, especially if you are after Standard or Pioneer playable cards.

The second return to an iconic plane, Dominaria United begins the story of the looming Phyrexian invasion story that spans over four Magic: The Gathering Standard-focused sets. While Dominaria United doesn’t share high card value compared to previous releases, there are a handful of cards to bear in mind if you open any Draft, Set, or Collector Boosters. Most importantly, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is by far and away the most expensive card in Dominaria United, coming with a handful of different printings that all offer a consistent price point.

As one of the headline cards for Standard and Pioneer, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse will continue to see play until Standard rotation next year, and even then, there’s still a home for the Black-aligned Praetor in eternal formats. Outside of Sheoldred, the reprint of Liliana of the Veil brought immense attention upon release, where the iconic Planeswalker card sees play in Pioneer with some fringe play in Modern. Going further, Liliana of the Veil and Timeless Lotus are other decent hits you can open in Dominaria United products. However, in Dominaria United Collector Boosters, you have a chance to open a card from Legends, a Magic: The Gathering expansion released in 1994, where you could open a card featured on the Reserved List.

If you aren’t aware, the Reserved List is a legally-binding promise Wizards of the Coast made to preserve certain cards from being reprinted to support the secondary market. Over the last five-or-so years, cards on the Reserved List are climbing up in value as collectors continue to snag these cards as they know they won’t be reprinted. However, there’s a couple of extremely high-value cards you can open from Dominaria United Collector Boosters from the Legends sheet such as All Hallow’s Eve, Angus MacKenzie, and The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale.

While it’s an older release, this one is worth talking about. The second entry in the Commander Legends series, Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate presents a collaboration with Dungeons & Dragons, another Hasbro-owned intellectual property. Offering a mix of new Commander cards and reprints, Battle for Baldur’s Gate was one of the bestselling Magic products through TCGplayer’s marketplace in 2023, as it provided affordability to Magic’s most popular format — Commander.

Another curious aspect of the release is how it blends Dungeons & Dragons, where consumers of the role-playing game also snagged Magic cards to aid their campaign or to create a Commander strategy based on their favorite character. What makes Commander Legends such an exciting product line is the ability to play a blend of Limited and Commander with Battle for Baldur’s Gate Draft Boosters, providing a fun deckbuilding experience with friends. At the time of writing, Etched Foil copies of Karlach, Fury of Avernus is an amazing hit due to the critical acclaim of Baldur’s Gate 3. With this video game release, it’s introduced many enfranchised and casual Magic players to the Commander release for the first time. However, there’s even more money within the expansion due to the intricate pull rates that made some cards more valuable compared to others.

The reason? Wizards of the Coast admitted that the non-Legendary Mythic Rare and Rare cards from Battle for Baldur’s Gate came in at a lower pull rate, making these harder to open and more valuable long-term. Chase Mythic Rares such as Ancient Copper Dragon, Battle Angels of Tyr, and Ancient Silver Dragon can retain their value compared to Legendary cards in the release as players saw less of these in packs. In terms of the most expensive cards from Battle for Baldur’s Gate — the Borderless printings of Ancient Silver Dragon and Ancient Copper Dragon remain the most valuable at the time of writing. Despite the discouragement when opening expensive cards, it’s best to treat this release to Jumpstart 2022, where you want to play Magic with friends without letting card value dictate the experience.
