Top 10 Bestselling Presold Cards From Wilds of Eldraine

Wilds of Eldraine releases a week today, and while the power level is much tamer compared to Throne of Eldraine, there are cards from the upcoming Standard expansion that are bound to see play in Standard, Pioneer, and Modern upon release. With exciting Adventure cards and a slew of new mechanics geared towards Limited play, Wilds of Eldraine hopes to offer plenty for casual and competitive players.

Encompassing this Standard release is your usual array of Draft, Set, and Collector Boosters, but there’s also two Commander Precons — Fae Dominion and Virtue and Valor — that offer a Faerie and Enchantment theme if you want to take a diverse approach to playing the singleton format. With Wilds of Eldraine previews kicking off August 15 and only finishing last Thursday, many players are beginning to snap up cards to secure a reasonable price before the September 8 release. While we’ll go through some of the bestselling Wilds of Eldraine cards sold so far, there’s a handful of cards that didn’t make the cut but are worth discussing.

Copies of Mosswood Dreadknight are seeing decent sales as it looks to be a notable role-player for Golgari Midrange builds in Standard and Pioneer. In addition, it’s also one of the more elegantly designed Adventure cards that’s also a nod to the Green Knight of the Arthurian lore. Then, Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator is a card many players missed during previews, and the hype is beginning to manifest as it’s a decent Planeswalker card in Standard with the potential to see play in Commander also. And finally, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist is an excellent Faerie Uncommon as the creature type is seeing a return in Wilds of Eldriane, where players will look to incorporate Sleep-Cursed Faerie and Spell Stutter into Standard builds upon release.

With Wilds of Eldraine previews behind us, let’s see which cards from the upcoming Standard expansion sold best, with the data starting when previews began on August 15. 

#10 Beseech the Mirror

A card that caught the eyes of many competitive Magic players is Beseech the Mirror, a Sorcery that offers some rather silly effects if you can meet the Bargain cost, which is an improvised variant of Kicker that sacrifices permanents as part of the cost instead of adding mana. In formats such as Modern, Beseech the Mirror can find a swathe of powerful cards such as The One Ring, where you can sacrifice the Legendary Artifact to find another one, and as you’re casting the card, the   “protection from everything” clause will trigger. Even in Standard and Pioneer, there are rumblings of using Beseech the Mirror to find and cast Sheoldred, the Apocalypse since you can Bargain away a Blood token created by Bloodtithe Harvester.

Then there’s Legacy, where Beseech the Mirror will likely be the most broken since you can win on turn one if you have a hand that features Swamp, two Dark Ritual, Lotus Petal (or a Lion’s Eye Diamond), and Beseech the Mirror. Through ramping with the rituals to cast Beseech the Mirror (with Bargain, thanks to Lotus Petal) to find Gaea’s Will, cast it, and then recast the cards in from your graveyard, cast Beseech the Mirror again to find Tendrils of Agony and cast it with enough Storm to kill the opponent. Even in Commander, Beseech the Mirror is strong in any Black strategy as it’s effectively a tutor with an upside, and tutors remain a popular yet polarizing aspect of the singleton format. In terms of eternal applications, Beseech the Mirror is one the best cards from Wilds of Eldraine and it isn’t close. 

#9 Greta, Sweettooth Scourge

One of the signpost Uncommons for the “Food matters” archetype in Wilds of Eldraine Limited is Greta, Sweettooth Scourge, who also looks to be an impressive addition to any Food-focused Commander strategy. Upon entering the battlefield, Greta creates a Food token and features a suite of excellent abilities when sacrificing these tokens. Through either adding +1/+1 counters to a Creature you control or drawing a card and losing a life (Phyrexian Arena, anyone?), Greta offers plenty of versatility and value for the singleton format. In addition, Greta, Sweettooth Scourge makes for an excellent Pauper (or Artisan) Commander since she’s an Uncommon, and there are plenty of powerful Commons and Uncommons that center around Food, as seen in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth along with Wilds of Eldraine.

#8 Night of the Sweets’ Revenge

A card that is a must-have for anyone who has the Tales of Middle-earth Food and Fellowship Commander Precon is Night of the Sweets’ Revenge, an Enchantment that turns those Food tokens into Green mana sources. While the Hobbit-focused Precon is one of the best homes for the Wilds of Eldraine Uncommon, Gyome, Master Chef and Rocco, Street Chef are other Commanders that will certainly want this card given the theme and synergy.

Any card that encourages mana ramp through using tokens is usually a popular inclusion for Commander, and Night of the Sweets’ Revenge is no different. Another exciting aspect about this card is if you are banked up on an obscene amount of Food tokens, you can sacrifice the Enchantment to buff your creatures based on the number of Food tokens you have in play as a reasonable win condition. All in all, this card is a powerful Uncommon, and one many will be excited to add to their existing Commander builds upon release.

#7 Lich Knights’ Conquest

A card that flew under the radar during Wilds of Eldraine previews was Lich Knights’ Conquest, a card that could see Standard and Commander applications. With the number of straggling Food, Clue, and Treasure tokens during a game of Commander, Lich Knights’ Conquest can turn those into Creatures if there’s ample supply available in the graveyard. One thing to note about the Sorcery is that the Creatures you’re returning to the battlefield aren’t targeted, which gets around pesky effects seen on cards such as Ground Seal.

The best way to see Lich Knights’ Conquest is a Black variant of the popular card Indomitable Creativity from Aether Revolt, where you’re sacrificing tokens or permanents to improve (or to take advantage) of the board state. While the Wilds of Eldraine card is likely to feature in Standard (more importantly, without Fable of the Mirror-Breaker), it’s also a slam dunk for any Black Commander strategy as the color is often very good at sacrificing permanents to use as a resource, to only reanimate them later on.

#6 Stroke of Midnight

Sometimes, you see highly playable Commons and Uncommons appear as a popular presold card leading up to a release, and Stroke of Midnight is one of these. Seen as a variant of Generous Gift from Modern Horizons 2, Stroke of Midnight is a viable card for Standard and Pioneer. Also, Stroke of Midnight is also fine for Mono-White Commander players that want a little more removal in their suite, along with other cards such as Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, and March of Otherworldly Light. While the Wilds of Eldraine Uncommon doesn’t achieve anything spectacular, it’s a clean yet efficient removal spell that can target any permanent that isn’t a Land.

#5 Moonshaker Cavalry

Unsurprisingly, the card that is dubbed as the White Craterhoof Behemoth is one of the more popular purchases from Wilds of Eldraine simply because it’s a convincing win condition for White-heavy builds in Commander. Once more, Moonshaker Cavalry (along with Agatha’s Soul Cauldron) is one of the safest purchases you can make leading up to (and during) Wilds of Eldraine’s release, this is because the Mythic Rare will become a favored win condition for various Commander archetypes such as Tokens, Knight-matters, Blink, and more — but it also it has the naming association with Eldraine, making it a difficult card to reprint in the future. Much like Craterhoof Behemoth, you can’t have enough copies of Moonshaker Cavalry due to the incredible popularity of Commander, and it’s an excellent card to have in your collection. 

#4 Not Dead After All

While it’s unusual to see a Common appear so high when discussing the bestselling presold cards of an upcoming release, there’s a good reason for it with Not Dead After All. While the design of the Instant was likely intended for Limited play, the card will play a notable role in one of Modern’s most notable archetypes — Rakdos Evoke (also known as Rakdos Scam). Innocuous it may seem in a vacuum, but Not Dead After All will likely replace either Undying Malice or Feign Death in Rakdos Evoke, where it continues to encourage the obnoxious turn one play of casting Grief for it’s Evoke cost, then with the Evoke trigger on the stack, cast one of these one mana Black Instant spells where Grief will re-enter the battlefield, allowing the Rakdos Evoke player to take two nonland cards and have a 4/3 with Menace for good measure.

What is notable about Not Dead After All is how Grief (or Fury) is how the evoked creature returns to the battlefield tapped but with a Wicked Role Enchantment Aura attached instead. Either way, Not Dead After All is the kind of card that could become the next Lórien Revealed, where it’s a Common that could have a higher markup due to Modern applications, where it could secretly become a valuable card without players realizing when cracking open Wilds of Eldraine boosters. Either way, if you happen to open foils, these will be worth something to the right Rakdos Evoke player. 

#3 Decadent Dragon (Showcase)

Looking to be a roleplayer in Standard is Decadent Dragon, where Showcase copies of the Wilds of Eldraine Rare are selling best at the time of writing. Perhaps one of the more pushed cards, Decadent Dragon comes with an excellent Adventure ability where you exile the top two cards of an opponent’s library, and you may play those cards for as long as they are exiled, it’s worth noting this also includes any Land cards.

While Decadent Dragon is missing the all-important “haste” to be considered alongside other iconic Standard Dragon cards over the years, such as Goldspan Dragon, coming with trample will allow short work of smaller threats such as Faeries, which will play a massive role in Wilds of Eldraine going forward. It’s unlikely Decadent Dragon will appear in Pioneer and beyond, but you can be sure this card will make an excellent impression in Standard upon release.

#2 The Goose Mother

One of the more strikingly visual cards seen in Wilds of Eldraine is The Goose Mother, which looks solid for Simic Counters-focused Commander builds or ones that care about the Food or Hydra card typing. Admittedly not the strongest to lead as a Commander, there’s some merit to the idea as you can add various Food-matters cards such as Tireless Provisioner, Pereguin Took, and even Academy Manufactor, then perhaps use Cyberdrive Awakener as a Blue Craterhoof Behemoth of sorts to close games.

Outside of Food synergies, The Goose Mother slots perfectly into a Zaxara, the Exemplary Commander build since it’s an X spell that fits into the Sultai colors. While The Goose Mother does feel like Hydroid Krasis at home, it hasn’t stopped players from picking up the Legendary Bird Hydra, because as we all know when it comes to Commander, peace is never an option. 

#1 Syr Ginger, Meal Ender

A card inspired by the fantastic Thrones of Eldraine teaser video (which you should absolutely watch) is looking to be another strong contender for constructed from Wilds of Eldraine. For two mana, the Legendary Food Knight comes with a bunch of text, some of which will become relevant in Standard (or even Pioneer) as she gains trample and hexproof if she’s attacking a Planeswalker an opponent controls.

But the most notable part of this card is the second ability, where you put a +1/+1 counter on Syr Ginger and Scry 1 whenever another Artifact you control is put into the graveyard. Note: It doesn’t specify non-token, meaning Food, Clues, and Treasure tokens all benefit Syr Ginger. One tidbit to keep in mind is that Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender is a Knight, which is relevant for those who play Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir in Commander, as you can sacrifice Syr Ginger and then return it to the battlefield once Sidar Jabari deals combat damage to a player. 

Furthermore, you can expect Syr Ginger to be a popular addition to Artifact-focused Commander and as an aggressive option in constructed, which is why it’s one of the bestselling presold cards from Wilds of Eldraine.
