What were the biggest winners with The Brothers’ War?
Magic: The Gathering’s next Standard set, The Brothers’ War, officially releases on November 18, 2022. The Brothers’ War takes players back in MTG’s storyline to a pivotal conflict between Urza and Mishra. Humans, Elves and other races become involved in the brothers’ feud as Dominaria’s fate is forever changed.
The Brothers’ War main set contains 287 cards and a curation of 63 retro artifact reprints. Urza’s Iron Alliance and Mishra’s Burnished Banner Commander preconstructed decks accompany the release of The Brothers’ War. Additionally, 15 Transformers cards may appear in The Brothers’ War Set and Collector Boosters.
New-to-MTG artifacts, creatures and other spells may synergize with existing MTG cards. For example, Tawnos, the Toymaker and Urza, Prince of Kroog provide build-around abilities and new synergies for Commander players. As a result of The Brothers’ War spoiler season, a handful of MTG cards spiked in price.
Gonti’s Aether Heart
Aether Revolt | Mythic
Gonti’s Aether Heart is a legendary artifact from Aether Revolt. It creates two Energy whenever it or another artifact enters the battlefield under your control. By paying eight Energy and exiling it, you get to take an extra turn after the current one ends. At the end of September, Gonti’s Aether Heart’s average market price spiked from $1 to $6, or 500 percent, before settling around $4 in October. The sudden spike in price for Gonti’s Aether Heart is due to the spoiling of Mishra, Eminent One.
Mishra, Eminent One
Commander: The Brothers’ War | Mythic
Gonti’s Aether Heart can generate multiple extra turns in a row with Mishra by making a copy of Gonti’s Aether Heart and renaming it Mishra’s Warform. Since Gonti’s Aether Heart and its copy make four energy entering the battlefield, you only need to create or play one additional artifact to reach eight energy. Once eight energy is achieved, you can activate the extra turn ability of the copy of Gonti’s Aether Heart. Here is a step-by-step approach to taking an extra turn.
- With Mishra, Eminent One on the battlefield, cast Gonti’s Aether Heart during your first main phase and produce two energy
- Move to the combat step and trigger Mishra, Eminent One’s ability to create a copy of Gonti’s Aether Heart with the name of Mishra’s Warform. Two more energy gets produced when Mishra’s Warform enters the battlefield
- During your second main phase, play or create an artifact to receive four additional energy
- Spend eight energy available and exile Mishra’s Warform to take an extra turn
Market Price: $12.15
Note that you may need to play or create two artifacts during your second main phase on subsequent turns to generate eight energy and earn an additional turn. Producing two or more artifacts is achievable through artifact token makers such as Retrofitter Foundry, Myr Turbine or Diamond Kaleidoscope. Other cards like Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast, Saheeli, the Gifted, Emry, Lurker of the Loch and Karn, Living Legacy may assist with generating more energy. While not an infinite combo, Gonti’s Aether Heart and Mishra can provide incredible value with repeated extra turns.
Chromatic Orrery
Core Set 2021 | Mythic
Market Price: $24.60
Chromatic Orrery is a seven-mana legendary artifact from Core Set 2021. It allows you to spend mana as though it were any color, taps to add five colorless mana and possesses a five-mana activated ability that draws you a card for each color among the permanents you control.
A handful of recently printed commanders, including Jared Carthalion, Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile and Jodah, the Unifier synergize well with Chromatic Orrery. Increased player demand for Chromatic Orrery probably caused its average market price to jump 47 percent between September 9 and October 28. Furthermore, the average market price of Chromatic Orrery climbed higher due in part to the spoiling of Drafna, Founder of Lat-Nam.
Drafna, Founder of Lat-Nam
The Brothers’ War | Rare
Chromatic Orrery, Drafna, Founder of Lat-Nam and Mana Crypt create an infinite storm loop, enabling you to cast Brain Freeze or Grapeshot to win a game. The combo requires Chromatic Orrery, Drafna on the battlefield and then playing Mana Crypt. By casting Mana Crypt and tapping it for two mana, you can activate Founder of Lat-Nam’s two-mana ability to bounce Mana Crypt back to your hand and then replay it. Playing the aforementioned three-card combo in a mono-blue Commander deck is appealing. Interestingly, Drafna forms another infinite combo with Ugin’s Nexus.
Ugin’s Nexus
Khans Of Tarkir | Mythic
Ugin’s Nexus is a five-mana legendary artifact from Khans of Tarkir that prevents players from taking extra turns at the start of those turns. Also, when Ugin’s Nexus goes into a graveyard from the battlefield, exile it instead and take an extra turn after this one.
With Drafna, Founder of Lat-Nam on the battlefield and 10 mana available, you can repeatedly take extra turns with Ugin’s Nexus.
- Cast Ugin’s Nexus for five mana
- Copy Ugin’s Nexus with Drafna’s three-mana activated ability
- The copied Ugin’s Nexus enters the battlefield
- The original Ugin’s Nexus enters the battlefield, triggering the legendary rule
- Choose to keep the original Ugin’s Nexus on the battlefield by sacrificing the copy
- The death trigger of the copied Ugin’s Nexus exiles it and gives you an extra turn
- Use Drafna’s two-mana activated ability to bounce the original Ugin’s Nexus back to your hand
- Take any additional actions and then end your turn
- The extra turn begins without Ugin’s Nexus on the battlefield
- Repeat steps one to nine to continue taking extra turns
Arcum Dagsson
Arcum Dagsson
Double Masters | Mythic
Market Price: $12.36
Arcum Dagsson saw a recent uptick in its average market price, likely because of the new Brothers’ War artifact-centric commanders, Mishra, Eminent One and Urza, Chief Artificer. Arcum Dagsson is an excellent upgrade to The Brothers’ War Commander precon decks as it can swap an artifact on the battlefield for a noncreature artifact such as Bident of Thassa, Lithoform Engine and Mirrorworks.
Artifact creature tokens generated by Mishra and Urza are outstanding targets for Arcum’s ability. Sacrificing Solemn Simulacrum, Mycosynth Wellspring or Ichor Wellspring with Arcum’s activated ability is also effective. Also, Arcum is a playable inclusion in Commander decks led by Breya, Etherium Shaper, Sydri, Galvanic Genius and Urza, Lord High Artificer.
Kuldotha Forgemaster
Double Masters | Rare
Kuldotha Forgemaster is another fine upgrade option for The Brothers’ War Commander decks.
Kuldotha Forgemaster is a five-mana, 3/5 Construct that enables you to sacrifice three artifacts (including itself) to search your library for an artifact card and put it onto the battlefield. Sacrificing three artifacts to put Myr Battlesphere, Mycosynth Lattice or Blightsteel Colossus on the battlefield can be devastating for your opponents.
The average market price of Kuldotha Forgemaster steadily rose after Mishra, Eminent One and Urza, Chief Artificer got spoiled. Each commander generates artifact tokens that can fuel Kuldotha Forgemaster’s ability. Also, the Urza and Mishra precon Commander decks include worthwhile artifacts to tutor for.
