Dominaria United will drop on September 9, 2022, with the upcoming Standard expansion hoping to promise plenty for Magic: The Gathering players and lore enthusiasts. With the release of Dominaria United, it will trigger a much-needed Standard rotation with Zendikar Rising, Kaldheim, Strixhaven: School of Mages, and Adventures in the Forgotten Realms leaving the Standard cycle. 

From breathtaking new Legendary creature cards to nostalgic hits, Dominaria United is looking to leave an impression leading up to Magic’s 30th anniversary, a celebration of thirty years since the trading card came into existence. As per every massive Standard release, Dominiaria United comes with the usual array of Draft, Set, Jumpstart, and Collector Boosters available upon release. Also, there will be Bundles and Pre-Release Kits alongside two Commander Precons—called Painbow and Legends’ Legacy. 

In conjunction with the usual products to support a notable Standard release, Dominaria United brings textured foils, showcase frames, and borderless treatments that you expect in a Magic: The Gathering release. Today, we are looking at the ten cards players are keen to open in their Dominaria United boosters, with some of the cards commanding incredible value.

#10 Leyline Binding

For Modern and Pioneer, Leyline Binding has the potential to become a cheap yet efficient removal spell for the popular eternal format. Thanks to the Triomes (Spara’s Headquarters, etc), Leyline Binding comes at a reduced cost thanks to the domain keyword ability and the numerous basic land types in the format, meaning you can cast the spell for two or three mana. 

Even in Commander, Leyline Binding could become a decent option for multicolored strategies that utilize white and can encourage a decent discount with the card. It would not be a surprise to see Leyline Binding become one of the best removal spells from Dominaria United and make a notable impact in constructed formats. 

#9 Plaza of Heroes (Extended)

Another Commander-focused card from Dominaria United is Plaza of Heroes, a versatile land option incorporating mana fixing for casting Legendary spells while packing protection for your Commander or other Legendary creatures. Upon release, Plaza of Heroes will slot into various Commander builds, given the emphasis on Legendary creatures.

With the third ability, the ability references the color and not the color identity. For example, if you only have one Legendary creature such as Najeela, the Blade-Blossom in play, you could only tap Plaza of Heroes for red as that is the color of the Najeela. However, if the only Legendary creature you control is The Ur-Dragon, you can tap the land for any color of mana since The Ur-Dragon is all five colors in the casting cost. While still a useful card, this is something to remember when adding Plaza of Heroes to your Commander decks. Despite the nuances, Plaza of Heroes is an excellent card and incredibly accommodating for the Commander format.

#8 Leaf-Crowned Visionary

Dominaria United introduces a fantastic cycle of two mana creatures to bolster a particular tribe, and Leaf-Crowned Visionary is the option for those who want to snowball with Elves. Perhaps the introduction of Leaf-Crowned Visionary could offer a lifeline for Modern Elves with the amount of efficient removal in Fury and Solitude. Another reason Leaf-Crowned Visionary delivers plenty of promise is the built-in Lifecrafter’s Bestiary effect, as Elves can generate so much mana. By accumulating all of this mana, you can replace the Elf cards you cast with card draw, meaning you cast more Elves, then rinse and repeat. 

Outside of Modern and Legacy, Leaf-Crowned Visionary joins the impressive line-up of Elf Lords that also incorporate outstanding amounts of resource advantage for Commander, especially in Mono-Green builds featuring Ezuri, Renegade Leader or Marywn, the Nurturer at the helm.

#7 Zur, the Eternal Schemer (Showcase)

Since Dominaria United cares deeply about Legendary cards, there is a new range of Legendary Creature cards to choose from as your next Commander. One of the more popular considerations at present is Zur, the Eternal Schemer, a reference to Zur, the Enchanter, one of the more powerful Commanders in the singleton format. 

While it isn’t as decisive compared to its predecessor, Zur, the Eternal Schemer still incorporates the emphasis on Enchantment Auras while converting those non-Auras Enchantments into creatures. Given how cheap and affordable Enchantment cards are such as All that Glitters, Etheral Armor, and Sphere of Safety, it will be easy to create Human Wizard as a Commander on a budget. Plus. Zur, the Eternal Schemer comes in the stunning showcase frame, depicted in a stained-glass setting to match the overall flavor of Dominaria. 

#6 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse (Textured Foil)

Once again, the Phyrexians return with Sheoldred wreaking havoc on Dominaria to further Phyrexian compleation. As for the card, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse comes with a simple yet punishing ability within a Commander environment. For Commander strategies that care about forcing card draw, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is sure to be a hit in Neuksar, the Mind Razer-style strategies where you want the opponent to draw so many cards. Then, you have the upside of gaining life every time you draw a card, pulling you ahead to use your life as a resource for cards such as Yawgmoth’s Bargain or Bolas’s Citadel.

In addition, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse comes in the stunning textured foil treatment, an effect first introduced in Double Masters 2022 to popularity among players. In total, 41 Legendary Creature cards integrate the unique foiling within the gorgeous showcase stained-glass design. With these exotic treatments, these cards will be in demand with Magic: The Gathering players who want to show appreciation for the deck they love most. 

#5 Sulfurous Springs (Borderless)

Not to mention, Dominaria United introduces these cards in gorgeous extended frame treatment for the first time with the other four (Battlefied Forge, Underground River, Brushland, and Llanowar Wastes appearing in Brothers’ War, the next Magic: The Gathering Standard release this fall.

Extending into Modern, these lands provide an excellent budget alternative to the more expensive duals if you want an affordable entry into Magic’s most popular eternal format. 

#4 Serra Paragon (Extended)

One of the best white Magic: The Gathering cards to feature from Dominaria United is Serra Paragon, a card that will become an immediate Commander staple upon release. Despite not drawing cards compared to recent printings such as Archivist of Oghma, Serra Paragon offers plenty of value as you can recur lands or three mana or less permanent spells from your graveyard. There’s plenty Serra Paragon can do, and Mono-White Commander decks will be particularly interested in adding the card to their lists. There is a range of Commander staples Serra Paragon can return including Sol Ring, Smugger’s Share, and Esper Sentinel, to name a few.

Outside of Commander, expect to see the Mythic Rare Angel appear in Pioneer alongside Giada, Font of Hope in Selesnya Angels as the mana curve of the strategy is so low. Either way, Serra Paragon is an excellent card that will offer recursive options for years to come. 

#3 Rundvelt Hordemaster

Switching back to tribal focus Rundvelt Hordemaster is an excellent option for those who like to go wide with Goblins. Since it is the first-ever two-mana lord for Goblins, expect to see plenty of demand for Rundvelt Hordemaster given the card value whenever a non-token Goblin dies.

Admittedly, these tribal-focused cards are incredibly pushed as Elves, Soldiers, Clerics, and Merfolk all see love in Dominaria United. What makes Rundvelt Hordemaster such a fantastic addition to Modern and Legacy Goblins is the ability to generate an engine alongside combo promise. Thanks to Hordemaster’s Light Up the Stage-esque ability, you have plenty of time to cast those Goblin cards from exile, generating excellent value if you have Mogg War Marshall or a Skirk Prospector in play. If you are looking to play Goblins in Modern, Legacy, or even Commander, Rundvelt Hordemaster comes with incredible value for two mana and becomes a Goblin staple upon release. 

#2 Liliana of the Veil (Borderless)

One of the most iconic Planeswalker cards in Magic: The Gathering’s history, Liliana of the Veil returns to Standard since the card’s initial printing from Innistrad in 2011. Not only is Liliana of the Veil playable in Standard once more, but the reprint also unlocks the card for Pioneer, an eternal format incorporating cards from Return to Ravnica (using only Standard sets) onwards. Plenty of players are excited to see Liliana of the Veil return once more, with the card likely to make an impact in Pioneer within Rakdos Midrange and Abzan Greasefang while providing an opportunity to pick up the once-Modern staple for the eternal format. While not part of Dominaria United in terms of format legality, you have the opportunity to open a The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale in Dominaria United Collector Boosters as part of the 30th-anniversary celebrations of Magic: The Gathering. Called Lost Legends, these are a selection of cards from Legends, a set first released in 1994 and was the first Magic: The Gathering set to introduce the ‘Summon Legend’ typing. More notably, cards from Legends feature on the Reserved List, an exclusive group of cards that Wizards of the Coast cannot reprint to preserve their monetary value with collectors. 

Out of the 244 Legends cards, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is the card you want to crack open in Dominaria United Collector Boosters since the card is worth thousands of dollars. Admittedly, there is a 3% chance to open one of these Lost Legends cards in Collector Boosters, with the chance being lower for The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. However, having the opportunity to open a card from one of Magic: The Gathering’s first expansion releases is too good to pass up, not to mention being a memorable experience as well as a winning lottery ticket! Many of the Lost Legends cards come with monetary value, but The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is the most expensive card you can open from Dominaria United by a substaintial margin.
