Double Masters 2022 is jam-packed with high-value goodies—especially for Commander fans.

Magic: The Gathering’s latest Masters set, Double Masters 2022, was released on July 8th, and contains reprints of highly desirable cards for multiple MTG formats. Anticipation for Double Masters 2022 grew during spoiler season as cards like Smothering Tithe, Allosaurus Shepherd, and Aether Vial got revealed. New artwork on borderless version cards makes Double Masters 2022 even more appealing to players.

Smothering Tithe

Market Price: $26.53

Allosaurus Shepherd

Market Price: $22.75

Aether Vial

Market Price: $8.11

Wizards of the Coast knew Double Masters 2022 would be a successful product by filling it with format staples and valuable cards, particularly for Commander. Multiple mythic rares and rares reprinted in Double Masters 2022 had average market prices previously over $50. Even though reprinting a card tends to lower its average market price, there are still plenty of pricy cards in Double Masters 2022.

Let’s review the ten most expensive regular-version cards from Double Masters 2022.

#10 Food Chain

Food Chain

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

Food Chain - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $15.91

Food Chain is a 3-mana green enchantment that first saw print in Mercadian Masques. Food Chain possesses a potent ability that allows you to exile a creature you control to add X mana of any one color, where X is one plus the exiled creature’s mana value. However, the mana produced by Food Chain can only be spent to cast creature spells.

Squee, the Immortal
Misthollow Griffin
Eternal Scourge

Food Chain creates an infinite mana combo by repeatedly casting and sacrificing Squee, the Immortal, Misthollow Griffin, or Eternal Scourge. Pairing Walking Balista with any of the creatures above is a game-ending combo. Having Ukkima, Stalking Shadow as a partner commander allows you to deal lethal damage to opponents through Food Chain after generating infinite mana with Misthollow Griffin or Eternal Scourge. Infinite mana created from a Food Chain combo can cast Rocco, Cabretti Caterer to put any creature in your deck onto the battlefield. There are plenty of other Food Chain combos worth exploring in Commander.

#9 Phyrexian Altar

Phyrexian Altar

Double Masters 2022 | Rare

Phyrexian Altar - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $25.11

Commander players should be pleased with WotC’s decision to reprint Phyrexian Altar. Previously a $90 card, Phyrexian Altar is a three-mana artifact that lets you sacrifice a creature to produce one mana of any color. Phyrexian Altar’s popularity in Commander is due in part to its infinite combo interactions and zero-mana sacrifice outlet. Please don’t wait too long to grab a copy of Phyrexian Altar as its average market price appears to be creeping upward.

#8 Kozilek, Butcher of Truth

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $24.37

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is the single most expensive Eldrazi in Double Masters 2022. While Kozilek does see some play in Modern Tron decks, Commander is probably driving its average market price. Although ten mana is a considerable amount, casting Kozilek, Butcher of Truth nets you four cards and a 12/12 with annihilator 4.

Animar, Soul of Elements

Market Price: $8.26

Jodah, Archmage Eternal

Commander decks that can generate a ton of mana or reduce the cost of creature spells are fine places to slot in Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. Commander players may decide to slot Kozilek, Butcher of Truth into more decks since it is now available at a discounted price.

#7 Force of Negation

Force of Negation

Double Masters 2022 | Rare

Force of Negation - Double Masters 2022 - magic

If it’s not your turn, you may exile a blue card from your hand rather than pay this spell’s mana cost. Counter target noncreature spell. If that spell is countered this way, exile it instead of putting it into its owner’s graveyard.

Market Price: $28.02

Force of Negation is an excellent reprint from Modern Horizon that counters a noncreature spell and exiles it for three mana. Also, Force of Negation may be cast for zero mana during another player’s turn simply by exiling a blue card from your hand.

The ability to cast Force of Negation without paying mana makes it a widely played spell in Modern, Legacy, and Commander. In particular, Modern decks such as Living End and Temur Cascade, often include a playset of Force of Negation. Considering its popularity, players may not have an extended timeframe to get copies of Force of Negation for under $50.

#6 Mana Drain

Mana Drain

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

Mana Drain - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $36.67

Impressively, Mana Drain is among the top 15 most-played blue cards on Commander on EDHREC. Mana Drain counters a target spell and provides an amount of colorless mana equal to the countered spell’s mana value at the beginning of your next main phase.

Reprinting Mana Drain made the card slightly more affordable for players eager to add a copy to their collections. Currently, regular versions of Mana Drain from Double Masters 2022 have an average market price of $43. While Mana Drain’s average market price could drop closer to $35 in the near term, its desirability and playability prevent that from happening for now.

#5 Mana Vault

Mana Vault

Double Masters 2022 | MythicDetailsPrice History

Mana Vault - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $42.27

Mana Vault holds an average market price of around $56, and is one of the best mana-generating artifacts in Commander. It produces three colorless mana for only one mana — with a slight drawback. Netting two mana from Mana Vault’s activated ability outweighs the four mana to untap it, and the one damage it may deal to you during your upkeep. Any discount on Mana Vault’s average market price creates a fantastic opportunity for Commander players to pick up a copy.

#4 Dockside Extortionist

Dockside Extortionist

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

Dockside Extortionist - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $52.11

Commander players were delighted when Dockside Extortionist got spoiled for Double Masters 2022. It’s a longtime Commander staple due to its Treasure token generation and ability to enable multiple infinite combos. Upon entering the battlefield, Dockside Extortionist creates X Treasure tokens, where X equals the number of artifacts and enchantments controlled by opponents. Demand for Dockside Extortionist remains robust, as its average market price of $57 is only a 12% discount from its pre-Double Masters 2022 price point.

#3 Cavern of Souls

Cavern of Souls

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

Cavern of Souls - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $53.25

Cavern of Souls is a fantastic non-basic land reprint originally from Avacyn Restored. When it enters the battlefield, you choose a creature type. Cavern of Souls can tap for colorless mana or mana of any color to cast a creature spell of the selected type, which cannot get countered.

Since Cavern of Souls can make creature spells uncounterable, it gets played in Modern decks such as Amulet Titan, Goblins, Humans, and Eldrazi. Cavern of Souls’ synergies transition to Commander as a fine addition to tribal decks like Slivers, Dragons, and Vampires.

#2 Wrenn and Six

Wrenn and Six

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

Wrenn and Six - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $44.25

It should not be surprising to see Wrenn and Six among the most expensive cards in Double Masters since its average market price hovered around $100 a few months ago. Wrenn and Six is the second most expensive regular version card in Double Masters 2022. For two mana, you get a planeswalker with loyalty abilities that can return a land from your graveyard to your hand, deal one damage to any target, or create an emblem that grants retrace to instant and sorcery cards in your graveyard.

Wrenn and Six is a Modern all-star often included in Five-Color Indomitable Creativity and Four-Color Blink decks. Recently, a Four-Color Blink deck featuring a full playset of Wrenn and Six took 1st place in the SCG CON Syracuse 30K Modern event.

#1 Imperial Seal

Imperial Seal

Double Masters 2022 | Mythic

Imperial Seal - Double Masters 2022 - magic

Market Price: $78.31

The most expensive regular version card in Double Masters 2022 is Imperial Seal. With an average market price holding over $100, Imperial Seal is a bargain compared to its previous Portal Three Kingdoms and Judge promo pricing. Imperial Seal allows you to search your library for a card and put it on top at sorcery speed for one black mana and two life. Player interest remains high for Imperial Seal as the card has over 25,000 decklist inclusions on EDHREC.
