Everything We Know (So Far) About Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man

Learn everything you need to know about the second Universes Beyond release of 2025.

2025 will be an absurdly big year for Magic: The Gathering, but especially for other franchises entering the game through the ever-growing Universes Beyond brand. We’re not only getting Final Fantasy and SpongeBob Squarepants come to town, but also one and only Spider-Man, too. Although, we’d be shocked if there wasn’t more than one card representing him and his alternate-reality incarnations.

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man is coming to us in September, and it’ll be swinging in with the man who can do everything a spider can with a host of classic villains, some allies, and more. Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man is going to be a Standard set, which means we’re all going to have to adjust to seeing Venom in decklists for a few months. To ensure you’re not pulling a J. Jonah Jameson, we’ve got everything you need to know about the upcoming Spider-Man release.

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man is due to release on September 26th 2025 and as a Standard set, will have cards that are legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Commander. This set will then be around for three years in Standard, but we’d be shocked if cards from the set weren’t around in Commander for the rest of time, and no doubt in a few other formats.

As this isn’t an original Magic set, we’re not expecting to see any Planeswalkers, but we are expecting to see a lot of different legendary creatures given the broad cast of characters Spider-Man is known for. We’ve seen a few previews already, but we’ll have to wait and see more about the set when they kick off properly on September 6th, 2025.

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man previews so far have come from the Scene Box that’ll be coming alongside the set. We’ll start with the man himself, Sensational Spider-Man, who is a three-mana blue and white 3/3 that can tap down creatures as it attacks and put stun counters on them, and then you can remove stun counters from creatures to draw cards.

Venom, Deadly Devourer is a four-mana black and green 4/4 with vigilance and menace that allows you to pay three-mana to exile a creature from a graveyard, and then add +1/+1 counters to a Symbiote card (which also includes Venom itself). Green Goblin, Nemesis is a four-mana black and red 3/3 with flying that lets you put a +1/+1 counter on it when you discard a nonland card and create a Treasure token whenever you discard a land card. Then you’ve got Pumpkin Bombs, a two-mana red artifact you can tap to discard two cards and then draw three cards, but you have to put a fuse counter of Pumpkin Bombs when you do. Pumpkin Bombs also deals damage based on the number of fuse counters to target opponent, who also becomes the controller of the artifact upon resolution.

Doc Ock, Evil Inventor is a seven-mana blue and black 8/8 that lets you turn noncreature artifacts into 8/8 creatures, which could be fun. Finally, we’ve got Grasping Tentacles, which makes someone mill eight cards and then lets you steal an artifact from that player’s graveyard. All-in-all, it’s a fun mix of playstyles for different player skill sets, and we’re looking forward to seeing more. It’s worth noting the Scene Box cards are not Standard legal but adhere to the Commander, Legacy, and Vintage legality instead.

Market Price: $548.44

Marvel's Spider-Man - Bundle

Market Price: $90.80

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man will bring with it the usual collection of Standard releases. That means we’ll be getting Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, a Spider-Man Bundle, and of course, the incredibly stylish Pre-Release Kits as well. Along with all of that, the most notable product is the Scene Box, which includes six Borderless cards that can be put together to create a scene, as seen with The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth and Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed.

One of the most interesting notes on the products is actually something we’re not getting. According to the latest Hasbro investment call, we won’t be getting Commander Precons with Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man. This may seem a little odd, but this set is much more introductory compared to the other Standard releases this year – plus the Marvel collaboration is a multi-year deal, meaning we’re likely going to get Commander Precons in the future in a different set.

In better news, there will be a new batch of Welcome Decks with Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man. Each Welcome Deck will be on a single color and character, with two 30-card decks inside. They’re amazing ways to introduce people to Magic: The Gathering while also likely being Standard legal.
