This is probably going to be a very big set, so having some very big Final Fantasy creatures makes a lot of sense.
Final Fantasy fans rejoice, you’re getting another card game to throw Cloud around in. Magic’s next Universes Beyond set comes in the form of Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY, and it has us all visiting four of the games in 6 (VI), 7 (VII), 10 (X), and 14 (XIV). While there were some murmurs about the face cards of the Commander Precons being a little bit safe, it seems the good stuff was hiding in the reveal last night.
One of the most notable cards from this is the dreaded Jumbo Cactuar, which in Final Fantasy can riddle you with needles, and in MTG is a seven-mana green 1/7 that becomes a 10,000/7 when it attacks. If you combine this with extra combat steps, say when using Anzrag, the Quake-Mole, you’ll get the +9,999/0 buff again, so that’s fun.

Summon: Shiva
Universes Beyond: FINAL FANTASY, Uncommon

While we’re big fans of the large cactus, the most interesting reveal outside of that was probably the new saga creatures. The one we’ve now seen is Summon: Shiva. Shiva is an ice goddess you can summon to deal massive damage in the games, and in MTG, it means that we’re getting a new take on sagas, which is fun.
Summon: Shiva is a five-mana blue 4/5 creature that has three steps to it. The first and second steps allow you to tap a creature an opponent controls and put a stun counter on it, which means it stays tapped for an extra turn. Then the final step has you draw a card for each tapped creature your opponents control. It’s a really flavorful take on the ice deity that feels very right.

We’re also getting more double-faced cards because many heroes and villains in Final Fantasy evolve into their final forms. We’re pretty sure Sephiroth will somehow have four forms or something despite there only being two sides to a card, but Wizards can figure that out. These are a perfect option for representing both big lore moments from the games along with showing the power of these characters in general.

We mentioned the Commander Precons briefly, so let’s cover those quickly. Limit Break is our Final Fantasy 7 (VII) deck led by Cloud, EX-SOLDIER and is a red, green, and white deck that looks to be about putting a bit of equipment on a bunch of creatures for profit. Revival Trance is the red, white, and black deck led by Terra, Herald of Hope, a key player in Final Fantasy 6 (VI), and seems to be all about bringing creatures back from the graveyard.
The Final Fantasy 14 (XIV) deck is white, blue, and black and called Scions & Spellcraft and is headed up by Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed, and looks to be a deck about losing life and casting big noncreature spells. Finally, pun intended, Counter Blitz is the Final Fantasy 10 (X) green, white, and blue deck led by Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian, and it looks like it’ll be all about counters.
They’re all cool concepts and do an alright job of representing the characters, but they may feel a bit safe for long-term MTG players who are, frankly, in need of the weird stuff to get really excited from a mechanical sense. They’ll be fantastic for newer players though, and it’s not like we won’t get a bunch of other legendary creatures in the main set.
