That’s some nice flutin’ boy.
Modern Horizons 3 is the next entry in the fantastic series of releases that deeply care about the Modern format. Debuting in 2019, the Horizons series has gone from strength to strength as the cards look to accommodate casual and competitive players alike. Admittedly, there have been some teething issues (I’m looking at you Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis and Fury), but overall, Modern Horizons has impacted Modern in a way that we’ve never seen before.
And with the massive success of the first two Modern Horizons releases, Commander now enters the fray as there’s a myriad of exciting cards for the singleton format, such as the rather wonderful Kudo, King Among Bears, a card that has strong flavor to marry the powerful static ability. While it may seem a little weird for Modern Horizons to accommodate to the Commander audience, this is a decent way to get more Commander players into Modern and vice versa, allowing more players to experience the wonders of your opponent drawing natural Tron without much issue.
But with all of these format-defining cards through these Modern Horizons releases, you need an ample suite of cards to answer these threats that’ll often crop up when playing Magic. As much as people don’t want to admit it, using “hate” cards remains a necessary tool to help combat your opponent towards victory. But enough of that, as we’re delighted to reveal a card from Modern Horizons 3, a card that will crop up in Modern sideboards upon the June 14 release, Disruptor Flute.
Oh, and if you’ve somehow seen the card before this reveal, no you didn’t.
Disruptor Flute
Modern Horizons 3, Rare
Pithing Needle-like effects are especially common in Magic as they offer a flexible colorless way to prevent annoying activated abilities and effects. It’s very common to see something like Pithing Needle appear from an Urza’s Saga or Karn, the Great Creator since it’s so easy to cast the card for the effect it brings. While Disruptor Flute does cost two mana, the addition of flash makes this much more reactive when an opponent wants to utilize a strong activated ability to help win the game. At the time of publication, Modern is full of these powerful activated abilities such as Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Grist, the Hunger Tide, and even Griselbrand, so having the right tools in your arsenal can help lead you to victory.

Another exciting aspect about Disruptor Flute is how it’s ideal against the litany of Planeswalkers in Magic, even the newer ones that will appear in Modern Horizons 3. Say your opponent manages to successfully flip Ral, Monsoon Mage into Ral, Leyline Prodigy, you can flash in Disruptor Flute naming Ral, Leyline Prodigy, meaning the opponent cannot activate any abilities of the Planeswalker after flipping the Mythic Rare. While it’s easy to focus on the “can’t be activated” aspect of Disruptor Flute, the card also has a way to push the costs of the named spell to cost more mana to cast. This is something we’re beginning to see in Magic on creatures such as Elite Spellbinder and Aven Interrupter as a meaningful way to force the opponent to use up more resources, so it’s really cool to see this design extend to a colorless card that any Modern strategy can accommodate.
